Hello and welcome to another edition of Lampton News
Firstly, I would like to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation for your dedication and service to our communities.
Recently, I’ve had the privilege to visit frontline staff from Recycle, Residential Services and staff working out of Hanworth, Isleworth, Chiswick and Brentford leisure centres. My visits were an opportunity to connect, listen and share the CORE values that define us as a team.
What struck me with immense pride during these visits, was the realisation that so many of you are already living and breathing these values each day. The visits were truly inspiring, as I had the chance to witness your hard work, unwavering commitment, and exceptional service to the people living in our communities.
I also thank you for your invaluable comments and brilliant ideas that you generously shared during our discussions. Many of these ideas will be taken directly back to the Exec team as they are essential in shaping the future of our organisation.
Remember that your voices and ideas matter. I encourage you to reach out to me anytime with your suggestions or concerns, especially if you encounter colleagues who may need support in living our values. I am here to support you and ensure that we continue to grow together as a team.
Once again, thank you for everything you do to make Lampton a great place to work. Together, we will continue to thrive, inspire and make a positive impact.

Lampton Services Celebrates National Recycling Week
In the lead-up to National Recycling Week in October, Lampton Services proudly reported a substantial upsurge in Hounslow's recycling efforts over the past year, coinciding with our company's sixth anniversary, having recycled an impressive 145,000 tonnes of material since launching.
As Hounslow Council's preferred recycling partner, Lampton Services Recycle has been instrumental in expanding recycling solutions. Notably, we’ve extended the food waste collection service to flats, resulting in a noteworthy spike in the borough's food waste recycling rate.
This initiative not only benefits the environment but is also cost-efficient for the council, saving approximately £100 for every tonne of food waste diverted from refuse bins, which can be reinvested in the local community.
Lampton Services is also committed to environmental sustainability, introducing an electric van to our fleet, and transitioning our collection truck to HVO fuel, achieving substantial carbon savings. Our Materials Handling Facility, processing over 22,000 tonnes of recycling annually, operates solely on renewable energy.
The commercial waste business, launched in July 2022, has made remarkable strides, diverting 545 tonnes of waste from landfills. Over 35% of its collections are now recyclables (food, cardboard, and glass), and it has grown its customer base by over 20-fold in just a year.
During National Recycling Week, Lampton Services Recycle featured prominently in the London Borough of Hounslow's campaign, encouraging the community to embrace recycling both in the short term and as a long-lasting commitment. Together, we are paving the way for a greener future in Hounslow.

KAA is a remarkable secondary school situated near the Grenfell Tower memorial. The school building is decorated with motivational quotes that inspire them every day (see photos).

Bilal's Inspiring Story
Our leisure centres are community-based facilities that bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds, each with their own unique and inspiring stories.
Among these remarkable individuals is Bilal, who joined our EOR (Exercise On Referral) programme at our Isleworth leisure centre in early October. Bilal, who has type 1 diabetes and Down’s Syndrome, recognises the importance of weight management and healthy choices in his life.
Initially, Bilal faced challenges in adapting to the equipment and incorporating the sessions into his routine. However, through consistent attendance, he now thoroughly enjoys the sessions. His favourite activities include using the treadmill to challenge himself and engage with technology and using the exercise bike to strengthen his legs.
Bilal’s father, Ahmed, is delighted with his son’s progress. Despite attending only four sessions, Bilal eagerly looks forward to each week, and the sessions have become an integral part of his routine. Ahmed also praises Bilal’s improved understanding of using the gym equipment.
What Bilal enjoys most about the programme is working with Soranny, his dedicated instructor. He describes her as funny and kind, appreciating her welcoming and patient nature. Soranny encourages Bilal to participate in various exercises and try different equipment. One of their favourite moments together is during boxing practice, where Soranny playfully pretends to be knocked over by Bilal’s punches, bringing laughter to their sessions.
In addition to the enjoyable sessions, Bilal appreciates the friendly atmosphere and the variety of equipment available at Lampton Leisure. He said, “I like the centre because I like to go to the gym with my dad and Soranny.”
Bilal’s commitment and progress in the EOR programme are commendable. His positive attitude and the support he receives from Soranny and his father contribute to his success.
Keep up the great work, Bilal!

Sophie Atkins appointed Group Head of Business and Development Strategy
Martin Cresswell, Lampton’s Executive Chair, announced that Sophie Atkins has been appointed on a secondment to the role of Group Head of Business Development and Strategy.
Sophie will be reporting directly to Martin and initially focussed on developing Lampton’s growth strategy, consolidating how we manage business development activity, and taking growth ideas through the Council’s JFDI Group.
“Sophie will be transitioning into this role over the next few months to ensure business continuity with her current areas of responsibility” Martin said.
“I am sure you join me in congratulating Sophie and support her in fulfilling the vital and exciting role for the Lampton Group.”
Lampton Leisure's First Assessment Centre Successfully Recruits Lifeguards
In a proactive move to address a shortage of qualified lifeguard applicants, Lampton Leisure recently organised its first assessment centre for recruiting lifeguards. The aim was to identify a group of Trainee Lifeguards who could undergo the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) course, filling the vital Recreational Assistant roles within the company. This approach allows Lampton Leisure to nurture local talent for future positions.
The assessment day commenced with a swim test, evaluating candidates’ swimming capabilities and their potential to complete the NPLQ course. After successfully completing the swim skills test, candidates took part in a group exercise, tasked with constructing a tower using only spaghetti and marshmallows. This activity allowed Lampton Leisure to assess teamwork, communication, and energy levels among the candidates. Following this, each candidate underwent a one-on-one interview.
The outcome was a resounding success! Nine Trainee Lifeguards were offered positions and the opportunity to undertake the NPLQ course. Lampton Leisure is enthusiastic about refining and using this recruitment approach in the future.
One of the successful candidates, Joe Osborne, expressed his enjoyment of the day saying, “I loved doing the group challenge and being able to meet my new colleagues. I am looking forward to meeting the rest of the team and being part of the leisure community. I found the Lampton Leisure team helpful and supportive.”
Lampton Leisure’s innovative approach to recruiting and nurturing local talent promises a brighter future for both the company and its new lifeguards.
Green Skills Bootcamp: Providing Employment Opportunities in Hounslow
Lampton Services is actively promoting employment opportunities in Hounslow, aligning with our commitment to a greener future. Our partnership with Hounslow Council has allowed us to offer work experience opportunities to learners in the second Green Skills Bootcamp course.
This four-week programme, generously funded, equips local residents with essential skills for green sector employment. Notable highlights include hands-on experience in our Countryside and Arboriculture teams, meadow restoration in Hounslow Heath, and preparing beds at Bedfont Lakes Country Park for autumn bulb planting.
Prior to this, learners attended two weeks of classroom-based sessions with horticultural firm Maydencroft, followed by a week of employability skills training.
Simon Shewry, Director of Commercial and Transformational Services at Lampton Services, said, “We are proud to be supporting Hounslow Council in delivering the second cohort of the Green Skills Bootcamp. The programme is valuable in identifying the skills gap within the green economy and bringing together like-minded organisations and businesses to resolve this, while creating more sustainable employment opportunities within the borough."

This invaluable experience not only empowers the intern but also enriches the workforce with diverse perspectives and new talents.
In addition to Project Search, Lampton Services has extended its collaboration to Inspire to Work, a programme focused on creating meaningful employment options for those facing various challenges.
